Issue 2 October 2014

Many pupils made a ‘Great Start’ to this school year!

For October we are looking out for: ‘Great Handwriting.’

Dear Parents:
v We are involved this year in several projects: The Green School Project,  The Discover Primary Science and Maths Initiative and Junior Acheivement, Ireland.
v We hope that our former 6th Class pupils are settling in well to their new secondary schools: Salerno, Taylor’s Hill, The Mercy, St. Enda’s, Merlin Woods and The Presentation.
v 5th Class are looking forward to attending a show as part of the Babaro Festival. Zoe is competing in the national kickboxing championships.
v Several of our classes have enjoyed nature walks to NUIG where they gathered leaves and seeds.
v After-school activities have begun: Knitting (M. Rachel), Sports Club (William) and Gaelic Football (M. Ann-Marie & Aoife C.) A sincere thank you to these teachers for making these activities possible.
v Seamus (Pre-school), Thomas and Treasa (Junior Infants) have a new baby sister – Congratulations!
v A selection of new toys have been purchased for Room 8 and the infant classes are enjoying playing with them.
v We enjoyed celebrating ‘Mercy Day’ and attending mass. We thank Fr. Eugene for the lovely ceremony.
v 6th Class visited Dubray Bookshop to meet author, Evie Brooks. She spoke to them about writing books. Many children also celebrated Nigeria’s Independence Day. Ciara Grealish will play camoige in Croke Park on Oct. 18th.
v Our first classes visited Eason’s Bookshop and listened to author, Derek Mulveen. He read his exciting new book – ‘Oisin the Brave’, Moon Adventure to them.
v We also ask you to please leave the building once you have left your child in to us in the hall. Please make use of our Parents’ Room and have a ‘cuppa’ . Please do not remain in the hallway as we do not have enough space.
v Also, our toilets are for our pupils’ use only. Once you leave the building please do not re-enter.
v We are legally required to report absences of 20 days or more.
v When your child has been absent for any length of time, it is school policy to send in a note explaining the absence. We thank you for your co-operation.

Green School News
This year we are working on the theme: GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP, LITTER AND WASTE. Well done to all the boys and girls who got new lunch boxes. This helps us to keep the hall and yard litter free at lunchtime. Congratulations to all the parents and pupils who joined us in our first walk to school on Friday, 3rd October. We hope to have even more walkers next month.
THANK YOU to all the pupils who participated in ‘Jersey Day.’ We raised €170 for the charity GOAL.

Room 7 won the Golden Boot Award for being the best walkers to school.
The next ‘Fit for Friday’ will take place on Friday, 7th November. Come on out and meet us all in Tesco car park at 8.20am to walk to school together!
